Ex-LG Chairmen appeals to govs for payment severance allowance

The Association of Ex-Local Government
Chairmen in Nigeria, has appealed to the
Nigeria Governors Forum to intervene in
ensuring the payment of backlog of severance
allowance of former appointees and elected
officials of the LG Councils.
This was contained in a letter of
congratulations to the Chairman of the Forum
and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari,
and signed by ASELGON National President,
Albert Asipa, made available to Nigerian
Tribune on Sunday in Abuja.
The former local government chairmen said a
handful of former workers of the councils had
died of “innocuous ailments on account of
their inability to access basic medication.”
The letter reads in part: “We like to
congratulate Your Excellency on your election
as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’
Forum (NGF) and on the enviable way you
have been steering the affairs of the Forum
since your emergence.
“There is no doubt that the NGF under Your
Excellency’s Chairmanship has witnessed the
desirable cohesion, direction and stability
required for its effective functioning. We pray
that the Almighty Allah will continue to imbue
you with the divine wisdom and guidance to
further set the Forum on a virile pedestal
envisioned for it by its founding fathers.
“As you might be aware, the Association of
Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria was
established by former elected council chairmen
as a national platform to forge strong
collaboration with all relevant stakeholders in
the policy towards strengthening the local
government system as the third tier of
government and as a means of achieving
accelerated grassroots development.
“It is on this note that we like to bring to your
kind attention the plight of ex-elected and
appointed local government office holders who
are being owed severance packages by their
respective state governments with a view to
seeking the NGF’s intervention in the matter”.
ASELGON National President lamented that
various appeals had been made to the
respective state governments to no avail while
recalling that the unpleasant situation was the
opposite of what obtains at the state level
where ex-Chief Executives and other public
office holders are not only paid their gratuities
regularly but also get their monthly pensions
and other allowances as and when due.
Asipa, added that the ASELGON believes that
the NGF under Yari, would accord their plea
the desired consideration, “being a man who
respects the 1999 Constitution which lends
credence to our demand.”
He said: “instructively, the adverse situation at
the local government level has continued to
exacerbate the living condition of ex-public
officers who once served at this level of
government.
“As it is today, some of the affected officers
have died of avoidable ailments foisted on
them by their poor conditions.”
He, therefore, appealed to the NGF, through
her Chairman, to put necessary machinery in
motion towards payment of severance package
to ex-local government public office holders.
