Osun doctors may suspend 5-month strike

HOPE that the striking doctors in Osun State
may suspend their five months old industrial
action brightened over the weekend as the
chairman of the Osun State Association of
Medical and Dental Officers (OSAMDO), Dr
Isiaka Adekunle, assured that the union will
convince members to suspend the strike.
In a statement made available to journalists in
Osogbo, on Saturday, by the Chairman, House
Committee on Information, Mr Olatubosun
Oyintiloye, Adekunle hinted of the hope of
resumption at a meeting of the lawmakers
with the leadership of the striking doctors.
The Speaker of the state House of Assembly,
Honourable Najeem Salaam, implored the
doctors to suspend the industrial action in the
interest of the masses, who he said were
bearing the brunt.
According to him, “you are major stakeholders
in the health sector, and whenever you decide
to lay down your tools, the masses suffer,
people die. We are appealing that you go back
to your duty posts while we continue our
dialogue to ensure that your demands are
met.
“The economic realities in the country and
particularly in a state like ours, requires that
we all make sacrifices and in making that
sacrifice, the Osun Assembly will stand by you
to see that justice is done.”
Responding, the OSAMDO chairman, Dr
Adekunle was said to have assured the
lawmakers that their appeal would be taken to
the congress to convince the doctors to
suspend the industrial action.
He lamented that lack of understanding
between the government and the union made
the issue to degenerate.
